| Outline
of the Course |
| The course includes 15 separate
hours of individual coaching, and two separate hours of reading
instruction conducted by a specialized reading instructor. These
sessions are spread over approximately a 15 week period -- depending,
in part, on a student’s schedules and time constraints.
The individual instruction is geared toward meeting the particular
needs of each student. During each of these sessions the instructor
reviews an entire SAT that the student has completed at home.
The tests the students take with us are not simulated versions
of the SAT, but actual SATs that have been administered in the
test center. Educational Testing Service (ETS) releases 3 previously
administered tests for publication each year, and research demonstrates
that using actual past tests maximizes the benefits of preparation
time. In addition to taking the test, students are required
to do SAT vocabulary work at home. The words that they are given
to study are words that have been shown over time to appear
most frequently on the SAT. |

| Outline
of the Coaching Session |
| The coaching session begins
by scoring the student’s SAT. Each week test scores are
recorded and used to gauge progress. After scoring the test,
an interactive vocabulary quiz is given replete with necessary
discussion concerning troublesome words. During this time words
are linked with similar SAT words in an effort to chunk information
so that words can be more economically stored accessed. Prefixes,
suffixes and word roots are analyzed, and typical context for
these words are discussed for both mnemonic and conceptual purposes.
The bulk of the session is geared toward examining the errors
made by students on the test they have taken at home, and then
demonstrating some simple techniques to make these problems
more solvable. Additionally, error patterns are analyzed. By
examining these patterns, individual comprehensive test strategies
are developed so that students can make optimal use of their
allotted time in the testing center. |
